Ms. Werthwein’s masterful paintings are strongly influenced
by the coasts of North Carolina and the Caribbean. Imagery of coastal scenery
and wild horses replete with movement are executed in mixed and watermedia.
These works are presented in sculptural format on box structures and emanate
with color, rhythm and light.
Ms. Werthwein states that “ these works explore imagery as I
follow the natural flow of the watermedia and continue with brush strokes both
deliberate and spontaneous. Energy builds in value contrasts of black and white
and color interactions culminating in calligraphic line. Form is defined and
redefined freeing imagery into pure visual experiences of the brush. “
Ms. Werthwein received an MFA in painting and MAED in Art
Education from East Carolina University. She lives near the sea and is a
natural plein-air painter. Her residence and studio are in Beaufort, North
